Instagram, Facebook, social media in general have turned into a place to flaunt curated pictures, and more or less show off the best sides of our lives. This isn't a critique or a support of social media as a whole, but rather a look at the real benefit of CrossFit...which is not the brand new six pack, lean legs, or bulging biceps you can post to Instagram. None of these are even the real benefit of CrossFit.
In fact, if you don't realize the real benefit of CrossFit, you'll never achieve any of those fun side effects, either.
In reality, the physical transformations are truly a positive side effect to the real benefit of CrossFit which is the way your mindset completely changes the more you participate in classes. Here's what that shift is, and why it happens.
At Summit, we have a saying. If you are able to handle hard things in your life (popped tires, new jobs, kids...in general) and still have a positive outlook and be a happy, healthy person to those around you, then we are doing our job.
Notice this does not say anything about our job being to make you lose weight. In our experience, the people who have the biggest transformations, the most incredible, long-term weight loss, and simply the best overall results with us are those who have understood the box is training them for life outside of our four walls.
In short, they have a mindset shift from thinking, "Okay my goal is to lose 30 pounds," to, "This place is improving my LIFE, regardless of the weight loss." They buy in, they follow the program, and they find a much deeper why to keep showing up and working hard. Through this, they find the real benefit of CrossFit.
Many of the people who come into our space start out believing they've been a victim of a circumstance. They had kids and lost the time to workout and eat healthy. They had their career take off and this took up their workout hour. They moved and never tried to find another gym.
The commonality among these reasons? They're all controllable.
You're career took off - congratulations! This is a positive thing and don't let it turn negative. Get up an hour earlier and move.
You started a family - another piece of wonderful news! Trade child duty off with your significant other so you each can escape for an hour and get a workout in.
You moved and haven't found a gym. I'm going to guess you also haven't made a lot of new friends yet, either. A CrossFit box can solve both of these challenges. You have the wonderful Google machine at your finger tips. Search for a box in your area and give it a try.
The point is, you have ultimate control over your decisions and your life. Don't give up that power.
The growth mindset has been written about honestly too much. There is nothing new to add to this topic. However, for many of us, there is a lot to be learned from it. Essentially a growth mindset says you're never stuck, and can always progress forward. Looking at the excuses above, it is a simple case of a fixed mindset taking over your brain.
How do we fix this?
We force you into doing something challenging for an hour each day. Many of us don't have this hour in many places on a day to day basis. You're good at your job. You understand how to raise a family. You take the same way to work every day. You eat many of the same foods. Life is routine and easy to follow.
Break that mold. We never repeat a workout, things are honestly never easy (you just get stronger and push yourself to new levels) and you're always faced with a new challenge.
Over time, you subconsciously turn off that part of the brain whispering, "You cannot do that," and replace it with a much louder, much more effective cheerleading squad shouting, "Yes you CAN!"
Will you still have doubts? You bet. Every time I go up to teach a class or write a blog, I have doubts about my ability to be effective and cause positive change in those I interact with. You'll never lose those doubts, but you will learn to silence them, and to do the scary thing. Life comes down to doing, and accomplishing scary things. The belief in yourself and your ability to do them is the real benefit of CrossFit. The other gyms can flaunt the weight loss, and the six packs. We'll keep building resilient, courageous, welcoming people who can change the world one day at a time.
