This weekend Jason, Katie and I had a chance to try out Artie's On The Go, which is a Paleo meal service here in Indianapolis. I had never had Artie's, but I had heard a lot of great things. It did not disappoint, the homemade barbecue sauces they serve alongside their lean meats and vegetables were amazing. After tasting the mustard barbecue sauce, I knew I had to start making these sorts of paleo/macro-friendly condiments to up my meal prep game.
Meal prep is great for meeting your health goals, but it can get really boring. A few sauce recipes can definitely give your meals a lift, and make you look forward to your prepared breakfast, lunch, or dinner again. My recommendation is to use the mustard barbecue sauce with pulled turkey or pork, spicy yogurt sauce with grilled chicken, and the pumpkin butter (yay fall!) on sprouted grain toast, or oatmeal.
Paleo Friendly Sauce #1 - Mustard Barbecue
- 1 Cup Yellow Mustard
- 1/4 Cup Honey
- 1 Tbsp. Tabasco Hot Sauce
- 1/3 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/2 Tbsp. Traditional Chili Powder
- Mix all ingredients together in a sauce pan, and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer for 5-8 minutes, let cool, and put into an air tight container.
Paleo Friendly Sauce #2 - Spicy Yogurt
- 1/4 Cup Favorite Hot Sauce (Sriracha, Valentina, Cholula, Tapatio, Sambal, etc.)
- 1 Cup 2% Greek Yogurt
- 1 Tbsp. Garlic Powder
- 1/2 Tbsp. Red Chili Flake
- 1/2 tsp. Cayenne Pepper
- Salt and Pepper to Taste
- Mix all ingredients together in a bowl until completely uniform. Taste and adjust for seasoning, then place in the fridge to keep cold. Serve cold alongside your grilled protein and vegetables.
Paleo Friendly Sauce #3 - Pumpkin Butter
- 2 Cups Pumpkin Puree (please note, this should have ONE ingredient, pumpkin. If it has sugar, it is pumpkin pie puree, and not what you want to be eating.)
- 1/4 Cup Apple Cider
- 1/4 Cup Pure Maple Syrup
- 2 Tbsp. Honey
- 1/2 Tbsp. Cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. Clove
- 1 tsp. Nutmeg (fresh would be best!)
- 1 Pinch Salt
- Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan, and put over medium heat.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for approximately 30 minutes, stirring every few minutes to keep the mixture from burning.
- Once the mixture has thickened, remove from the heat, and allow to cool before serving.
