Staying Healthy While Traveling

This weekend one of my best friends and college roommate, Matt, got married in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was an amazing ceremony, and it was great to be back with all of the people I went to college with at NC State.

Given the wedding was across the country, my normal schedule of training and sticking to a clean diet was thrown off. Between the various flights, wedding events, and catching up with old friends, there was not a lot of planning that could go into place to stick to my macros. Instead of worrying about it, I made a strange decision: I decided to just wing it and live a bit.

I went to school in Raleigh, and because of this there are a lot of restaurants which hold sentimental value to me. Trophy Brewing is my favorite pizza spot in the world. I spent a few too many nights with good friends at Village Draft house over a pint. With all those friends back in town for just one weekend, we were always going to hit those spots.

I had a decision to make: prioritize my macros or catch up with some of my closest friends over amazing pizza and a couple of beers. Let's think about it for a moment. Are a couple slices of pie and two beers really going to ruin my ability to compete in CrossFit? Probably not. But being the guy who can't go out to eat because he's so intense about his nutrition probably hurts some friendships.

At the end of the day, nutrition and healthy living are long term life style choices. One weekend does not make your life unhealthy. When you have a big event, such as one of your best friends getting married, eat the friggin' wedding cake. You won't regret it. When you come back home, and the festivities are over, get back to your lean meats, vegetables, and complex carbs. Maybe you can actually have your cake, and eat it too.
