Why I Have Never Done the CrossFit Open

You would imagine that as a CrossFit box owner, coach, and former Division 1 athlete I would be itching to compete in every CrossFit competition out there. Especially the CrossFit Open. Unfortunately, that has not been the case. At all. Last year I intentionally acted like I was, "focused on getting strong, bro" during The Open. Then I became "too busy" to do competitions when opening the box. I have always found an excuse to not compete in my new sport.

What happened?

To be honest, I've been scared. Perhaps still am slightly. Scared of what, you might ask? Scared of not being successful.  You see, I played soccer my entire life at a really high level. I've been a part of national championship teams. I played at the highest level in Division 1. I don't know that I'm afraid to fail in life (can't be totally worried about that and be an entrepreneur) but I am afraid of failing totally athletically.

Although my soccer career didn't end up the way I wanted it to, I could easily fall back in my head on the truth that I played at a really high level. But I know that this first time doing the Open is not going to be pretty. I already know I won't be even close to a Regional athlete. Heck, I'll be happy to complete every workout Rx.

So, why now?

Pretty simply, how can I tell the athletes in the box, my friends, that they should be doing this when I won't? Sometimes it is really nice to have accountability to spur you to action. I believe in leading from the front. That means I need to get on the floor every Friday night and do the workouts.

Plus, I've gotten to a point where I just don't care if I don't do as well as I would like. It's not even the point. The reason I love CrossFit is that it truly is all about being a better version of YOU than you were the day before. That's the message. And let's be real, we all get caught up caring about being faster, stronger, whatever-er than the people we compete with. But comparison kills drive. It kills the fun. Compare yourself with you from yesterday. The week before. The month before. I'm not Rich Froning or Mat Fraser or any of the other incredible Games athletes. But I'm more fit than I was last year. I'm stronger than I was last year. And my mindset is definitely a lot better than it was last year.
