How to Achieve Your New Years Resolution [Part 2]

Bad news from part 1 of our series. Turns out that, according to Forbes, only 8% of all people achieve their New Year's Resolution. But don't give up! Summit Strength & CrossFit SSP is here to help. This is part two in our three part series on how to achieve your New Year's Resolution. In the last post, found here, I went over the biggest mistake people make when creating a New Year's goal: failing to make a plan. This post will be focused on how to set a goal with an actionable plan.

SMART Goals:

SMART goals are at the center of any well-set plan to change. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Timeable. For instance, let's say that your goal is to "get stronger." That, unfortunately, isn't a SMART goal. I'll just go ahead and call it a stupid goal. Because you'll be smashing your head against a brick wall chasing whatever "stronger" means, with no idea how to measure that. It is stupid to smash your head against a brick wall. Don't be stupid.

A much smarter decision would be to set a goal which follows the SMART guidelines. Instead of "get stronger" it could look something like this:

  • Specific: Increase the weight I can lift on my back squat.
  • Measurable: 20 pounds heavier on the lift.
  • Actionable: I will back squat once per week, and front squat once per week to improve.
  • Realistic: Unless you are the absolute peak of your fitness ability, adding 20 pounds is realistic for almost anyone given a reasonable timeframe.
  • Timeable: I will achieve this goal by June 30, 2017.

The Plan:

Now that you have a goal written in the proper way, you can actually develop a plan to achieve that goal. As with most things, just going out on your own and trying to figure it out is not the best plan. While I imagine that many people could solve our example goal on their own without a coach, doing so would be much more frustrating than an alternative solution. It would extend the amount of time you take to achieve your goal, and why would anyone want that? In part three of this series, I'll go over a much better plan for taking your SMART goal and going above and beyond what you imagined before. Stay tuned for more.
