In the last post, found here, I went over the biggest mistake people make when creating a New Year's goal: failing to make a plan. This post will be focused on how to set a goal with an actionable plan.
SMART goals are at the center of any well-set plan to change. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Timeable. For instance, let's say that your goal is to "get stronger." That, unfortunately, isn't a SMART goal. I'll just go ahead and call it a stupid goal. Because you'll be smashing your head against a brick wall chasing whatever "stronger" means, with no idea how to measure that. It is stupid to smash your head against a brick wall. Don't be stupid.
A much smarter decision would be to set a goal which follows the SMART guidelines. Instead of "get stronger" it could look something like this:
Now that you have a goal written in the proper way, you can actually develop a plan to achieve that goal. As with most things, just going out on your own and trying to figure it out is not the best plan. While I imagine that many people could solve our example goal on their own without a coach, doing so would be much more frustrating than an alternative solution. It would extend the amount of time you take to achieve your goal, and why would anyone want that?
