Wandering Web with the Soulfull Sisters

One of my classmates from NC State has a wonderful food blog, titled the Soul-full Sisters which has some of the most delicious looking recipes. In particular, Quinn and her sister Paten put a fun spin on southern comfort food which I fell in love with while at school in Raleigh. However, with it being summer and all the sisters have put their creative food minds together for a healthy, light meal which takes advantage of the delicious produce offerings of the season. This shrimp lettuce wrap recipe looks amazing and I cannot wait to try:

The ketogenic diet is becoming a pretty big trend lately, even making its way into athletic circles. While I am not a doctor of any sort, I can say that nearly every piece of research I have come across points to carbohydrates as being the best source of fuel for our bodies. Without carbs you simply will not perform as well in an athletic environment. Here, an actual doctor breaks down why this is the case:

While the ketogenic diet is probably not your best choice for athletic improvement, there is extremely interesting research being done on its effect for overall health, and also its ability to help fight cancer. Once again, I am not a doctor and am not giving medical advice. This article is just very interesting, unpublished information from a New York Times journalist discussing what some doctors have found while studying the effects of ketogenic diets on cancer cells: http://fourhourworkweek.com/2016/06/06/exclusive-unpublished-material-from-nyt-magazine-story-on-cancer/

If only you could simply eat your way slim, that would be nice. However, that is not the case. While you may read articles about some foods making your metabolism speed up more than others, there are not any foods that make you burn more calories than you are taking in while eating. All food has a thermogenic effect, thereby increasing your metabolic rate. Also, as this article details, you absorb more calories from some foods than from others.
