With the Olympics kicking off this week, I thought finding a few articles about this sporting event would be appropriate for this week’s Wandering Web. I know that the popular thing in the media is to rip Rio and its (admittedly horrible) job of preparing to host the games; however, for the majority of the athletes this is still a dream come true and will go down as one of their greatest lifetime moments.
Leading off, let’s start with food, because obviously these athletes have figured out how to eat in order to fuel their bodies appropriately. What I really love, is that in all of the articles I’ve gone through about olympians and their food consumption, it is very rare to see any single one of them that have made the Olympics based on restrictive diets. Put simply, they eat whole food, make sure they are eating healthy fats, proteins, complex carbohydrates, and even sometimes candy! In keeping with being normal human beings, these Olympics athletes have a very normal routine for getting ready for the big race. Speaking of interesting food choices, check out this infographic on some of the things athletes eat. It hopefully goes without saying, but eating like this is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. For one, these men and women train for long hours each day at extremely high intensities. Rowing has to be one of the most physically demanding sports. At the Olympics this year, the rowers also have to deal with some of this less-than-beautiful water, on top of grinding through what is already a brutal workout.
