I’ve been reading a book about the New Zealand All Blacks, the best rugby team in the history of the sport, and how their principles apply to the game of life. Along those lines, this week’s Wandering Web is all about motivation and how to push through the hard times. The book, Legacy, has a chapter on mantras and how they can help center your thoughts in difficult moments. One of the easiest ways to have a near constant stream of intrinsic motivation is to have a deep rooted “why” that you do anything. This why can be literally anything, as long as it actually matters to you. This article is more explicitly geared toward working out, and how you can motivate yourself to make it to the gym for consistent workouts. I really like some of these ideas, especially the idea of rewarding yourself for consistent, good behavior. However, I would like to point out that motivation through food is a bad choice. For example, if you decide to always hit Dairy Queen or Five Guys for an ice cream or burgers and fries after you do a workout, you will do more harm than good. You can’t outtrain a bad diet. Continuing that idea of finding your “why” is intrinsic motivation. Essentially, your why is your strongest intrinsic motivator, which is what this Stack article says is the motivation which actually works. Extrinsic motivation is definitely something like an exterior reward, while intrinsic is your own reason for accomplishing a task.
