One of our original members, Matt, recently took on the challenge to eat the Paleo Diet. While this form of eating is sometimes tough to follow, you’d be surprised how many options are actually paleo friendly, delicious, and verifiable superfoods. Side note on that: if you want a superfood, pretty much close your eyes, wander around the produce section of the grocery store, and pick anything up. But that is a story for another blog post.
In my opinion, and from talking to Matt and other people who are eating a diet based on whole foods, no grains, and a high fats and proteins, breakfast is a very difficult meal to work with if you don’t really enjoy eggs. I know that some people will say, “oh just eat even more bacon if you don’t like eggs!” But come on. Have you ever eaten a plate of bacon and then tried to workout within that same day? It’s not pretty. Plus, what if you want something different? Perhaps something sweeter. Variety is the spice of life. With that idea in mind, Matt and I made up this recipe, and it is a very good break from the normal eggs and bacon breakfast, as well as being portable.
The frozen banana here is really important, because it gives that creamy texture that honestly you cannot replicate without dairy. Between that, and the small amount of avocado, this smoothie is nearly as thick and creamy as a milkshake. Additionally, bananas are a great source of potassium and complex carbohydrates, while avocadoes provide some of the healthiest fats in the world. Finally, while you can use dark chocolate in this smoothie, but cocoa nibs are full of antioxidants and lower in sugar, while also being rich in fiber.
